According to Sausolito’s Marine Mammal Center,  ocean trash kills more than a million seabirds,10,000 marine mammals and turtles each year. 80% of the trash in the ocean comes from the land. 90% of the trash in the ocean is plastic.

On a two-hour walk through Griffith Park, I picked up a lot of trash including those maddening, elusive plastic shopping bags that (thank God) will soon be banned in Los Angeles, those “creepy, flimsy” bags  and that often drift and dance just beyond one’s grasp.

I’ve always been a fan of lists in literature and I found making the list of the trash I picked up to be strangely addictive:

7 crushed paper towels

1 ad for the Hollywood Bowl Summer 2013

1 crumpled but still cheerful yard sale sign

1 thin rubber glove

1 pacifier

1 Red Bull can

1 Fritos bag

1 wrapper for a Bladder Buddy pee bag (not actual bag)

1 burrito wrapper

1 Capri Sun package

1 paper cup

½ a foam cup

2 granola bar wrappers

3 tightly wound bags of dog shit (deposited discreetly in the bushes)

2 small water bottles

2 clothing tags

1 ad for a kid-friendly orthodontist

2 plastic sandwich bags

1 Cheeto’s bag

2 plastic straws

1 coffee jacket

1 Famous Amos bag

1 business card for a private investigator

2 parking receipts

1 label for Starbucks coffee label

1 Lay’s Potato Chip Bag (half buried in the dirt that seemed to be the site of a sad picnic).
